It’s just like riding a bike…at least that’s what they say, right?  When you have done something so many times, it all comes back to you. Maybe.  I’ll admit I had my doubts as I sat down at my sewing table and quite literally “blew the dust” off the old machine.  It had been such a long time since I had allowed myself the freedom to create something just for myself.  I was a little nervous, rusty even, as I began laying out my fabrics and vintage lace pieces.  I have always sewn without a pattern or a plan, letting my fabric be the guide.  I guess it is a bit strange to choose your fabric first-then design, but for someone as visually inspired as myself, it’s perfectly normal.

Self-doubt plagued the first hour [nope that doesn’t work, no that won‘t either] .. but then, it did come back.  And as I began cutting, tracing and pinning I remembered why sewing is so special to me.  It’s one of those rare things that haven’t really changed much with technology.  Sure, the machines are more advanced, but all in all there are no short cuts.  I sew just like my Grannie did, when her kids were young and running through the house, losing myself in the hum of the machine and the endless line of road mark thread.  In that moment, I realized just how much I had missed this ritual that connects me so to the women of my past.  I was completely relaxed and at peace.

Is this the most beautiful dress I ever designed?  Not really, but I am so glad I sat down to create for me, and most importantly, for my family.
