I hope this post finds you all enjoying the holiday and completely prepared for Christmas Day! Of course if your are anything like me, with five days left to go, you are still shopping and making last minute preparations. This post is a very good example…definitely a little late for a holiday home tour but I got it done, just in the nick of time!
This year has been a very BUSY, but blessed one for my family. We purchased a new (well, it’s really old but new to us) home that we have been renovating, Colton started High School, Grace started Middle School and….Dylan GOT MARRIED!! (pics to follow soon) Sooo…I have been just awful about blogging. I have so many beautiful posts and images to share with you and I promise that it is my New Year’s resolution to get caught up. Better late than never.
So on with the Holiday Home tour..
I will preface this post by saying that I am incredibly frugal when it comes to home decor, fashion or just about anything. So as we go along the tour I will try to point out any items that were great deals and where you can find them, or how I created a look using crafts or antiques.
The formal living-
Formal isn’t really a word that suits our family’s life style but I do enjoy having a space that always stays nice and neat for when unexpected guests stop by. I wanted this room to be elegant with a bit of rustic, organic charm. I love the contrast the burlap garland adds to the elegant touches such as crystals and mercury glass. My pillows are all from HomeGoods, where I didn’t spend more than $25/each including the feather insert! Now that’s a great deal. If you don’t have a HomeGoods in your area, try Marshall’s for similar items. I also purchased the gray wrapping paper, gift tags and the sweet Santa there, all at incredible prices but still amazing quality!
The vintage armchairs have been up cycled and repainted with a beautiful gray. When I purchased them they were an ugly orange stain but the right price for chairs with such good bones and great tufted upholstery. I used CeCe Caldwell chalk paint in “Pittsburgh Gray”. The tray on the ottoman is actually a vintage vanity tray. You can pick these up at most antique stores for next to nothing. They are beautiful with votives as the mirror reflects the candle light. The adorable houses on my mantle were inspired by these nordic lanterns I spotted from Terrain. I loved the look but not the price, so I found paper mache houses at Hobby Lobby and with a little metallic paint and some flameless LED candles I have a similar look. Plus, they are a fun craft to do with kids.
the formal dining-
Ok, so this is currently one of my favorite rooms in the house. When we first moved in it was the ugliest room and the first one everyone saw when entering..ugh. Ever been there? My old dining room set was outdated and completely awful..I couldn’t even paint it to make it look better. haha Well, this just wouldn’t do since I was hosting Thanksgiving at my house for the first time ever. I had to get on it and it had to be on a budget.
I knew I wanted the look of the Salvaged Wood Trestle table at Restoration Hardware but didn’t want to pay that price. In my defense- I absolutely believe in quality and am willing to pay for it with many things..but with some furniture items, particularly those that won’t be used heavily and with a trendy look that probably won’t last as long as the piece will, I just can’t. I know myself too well and know I will become bored and don’t feel it’s the greatest investment for me personally. So instead, I purchased this table from World Market. I find this table to be very solid and great quality for the price! I also purchased the settee and bench from World Market. The buffet is actually my old bedroom suit dresser. I distressed and white washed it and with the help of my hubby took out the middle drawers, finished it out and added an old Belgian bottle crate that I found for $60 to store a few wine bottles in. The mirror is a floor mirror I already had but placed on the buffet because I loved the drama the height added. Lamps are from HomeGoods and cost $120 for BOTH. And lastly…the best bargain of all…. my chandelier. I had been coveting the Clarissa chandelier from Pottery Barn. Instead I found this one from Overstock and trust me folks, it ‘s the SAME chandelier with the only exception being the hooks that the crystals hang from. They aren’t as fancy, but guess what? They don’t show..and for $300+ in savings..I’ll take it. Oh and the “cheers’ pillow, yep..HomeGoods again. :)
the family room-
I love this reindeer! He is also paper mache from Hobby Lobby. We painted him and I hung him on my mirror using one of those suction cup wreath holders…added some garland and some ribbon and he is SO cute. I pick up milk glass vases every time I see them. You can find these at GoodWill or antique stores for about $3-5 bucks a piece. They make beautiful candle holders. The tray is actually a framed mirror..and it works quite well.
This painting is one of my most treasured possessions and will get it’s own blog post soon. It was a gift from a dear friend and is a painting of a portrait I took of Grace when she was nine years old. Can’t wait to share more about it.
the breakfast nook-
I added a hot cocoa bar to my vintage buffet in the breakfast area. This Santa hot chocolate set was made by one of my Grandmothers. She owned a ceramic shop and was so talented. My mom recently passed this on to me and it is a treasured heirloom in our home.
Gracie’s room-
Easily my favorite room in the house, Grace’s room is covered in my favorite vintage blues, ballet pinks and gold. We are still working on finishing her room (complete with a collection of vintage ballet prints) and will share it soon. Cute milk glass ornaments and tulle wreath were made by us and you can find that tutorial here. The canvas portrait of her above her bed is by me and you can see more from that session here.
the master bed and bath-
My second favorite room is my master bath complete with my vintage claw foot tub! It’s better than therapy!! Beautiful tub caddy by the talented folks at Peg & Awl.
